Illinois police fatally shot a man who attacked two people with a sledgehammer Wednesday.
The incident happened when Round Lake Beach police responded to a domestic disturbance at a home around 3:15 p.m., WMAQ-TV reports. When officers arrived at the scene, they found two women in a garage with serious blunt force injuries to their heads and faces.
A man with a sledgehammer came to the door of the house as police approached, and he refused to drop the weapon when officers ordered him to do so. The suspect then lunged at officers, who tried to subdue the man by deploying a Taser.
The man lunged at police three times before officers finally opened fire and shot the man. He was rushed to the hospital, where he later was pronounced dead.
The two women in the attack were taken to the hospital with serious injuries. Three Round Lake Beach police officers also were hospitalized for evaluation, police said.
The shooting is under investigation by the Lake County Major Crime Task Force.
